Battery R&I Blueprint: campaign launch & call for endorsement
What the Battery R&I Blueprint is
The document is the BEPA members' collective proposal for the next EU research and innovation framework programme, FP10. Developed through multiple rounds of consultation with industry, research and policy stakeholders, it sets out the most ambitious and impactful R&I strategy for the next long-term EU budget — and it does so by first redrawing the picture of what the European battery sector actually is today.
It is built in four parts:
- Part I — The Stakes. The updated picture of Europe's battery ecosystem: batteries have shifted from a climate tool to a strategic asset for competitiveness, energy security and defence. It sets out the "double diversity" that defines it —chemistry portfolio for our application portfolio — and where Europe honestly stands today.
- Part II — The Challenge. The four challenges facing European battery companies: scope, scale, speed and sustainability — from over-concentration on a few chemistries and one anchor market, to the production-economics gap, to the time it takes us to move from research to market.
- Part III — The Case for Action. Why these challenges cannot be solved by industry alone, and why sustained public support for R&I is the decisive lever.
- Part IV — The Proposal. Our conclusion: a dedicated Battery Partnership under the next MFF, building on BATT4EU — the only instrument that brings the full value chain, the full chemistry portfolio and all applications under one coherent roadmap.
In short: one ecosystem, one roadmap, one partnership, one impact.
Why and where BEPA needs your support
The agenda for the next seven years of battery funding is being defined right now. Our position is already gaining ground — through the SET Plan, seventeen Member States have adopted a Thematic Vision whose first recommendation is to maintain a dedicated battery partnership beyond the current Framework Programme. But institutional support alone will not carry it. What makes this proposal impossible for decision-makers to overlook is the number and the breadth of organisations standing visibly behind it.
That is why BEPA has opened a dedicated campaign page where any organisation in the battery ecosystem can read the Blueprint and add its endorsement, together with a short quote.
Every endorsement is one more piece of evidence that this is not BEPA's ask, but the sector's.
